Elephants are simply wonderful. They are and have been for many years, my favorite mammal. With their gentle, graceful resilience their ability to adapt and endure the world we have changed for them is incredible.

Here are some fun facts about elephants you may not know:

• They are so intelligent they can recognize themselves in mirrors.

• They can "hear" low rumbles through special cells in their feet.

• Happy elephants make a soft rumbling sound that is a lot like a cat's purr.

• An elephant's trunk has about 150,000 muscle units but zero bones.
