Many of us have bought the idea that “brutal” honesty is a necessity of rigorous honesty.

Sure, there are some truths which must not and cannot be softened without becoming a lie. This isn’t about those moments.

This piece is about the softer moments. How did your parents correct you? Did you feel empowered or humiliated after their “advice”? 

How do your friends support you through a messy break up? Do you feel pathetic, or validated by their assessments of your pain?

How do you speak to yourself when you’ve made a critical error in judgement? Do you acknowledge what lead you to this moment so you can grow from it? Or do you beat yourself up for not knowing better?

At some point the path of Honesty meets at a crossroads with Cruelty and Compassion. 

If what we have to say to each other —as well as to ourselves, is not measured in equal doses of care and kindness we readily know and accept the intent was never truth speaking; but in fact brutality. 

Always be honest, but never at the sacrifice of kindness.
