 The left hand path is most commonly associated with the occult or modern mysticism. However, that’s not the way I see it. This practice of taking the left hand path, at its core, is to contrast sharply with traditional, conformist religions by encouraging practitioners to challenge societal taboos and question orthodox morality.

Too many horrible things are allowed, or even encouraged, in many [ancient and modern] world religions that we need not ever again tolerate. There are too many wars fought in the name of this god or that religion. There are too many predators thriving in holy robes and too many abusers holding up scripture to justify the pain they inflict.

From my POV, the left hand path is to become aware of this truth; to acknowledge plainly and clearly what suffering has been created and maintained at the feet of religion. Then, reject it. Not rejection of truth. Reject the practice that allowed that reality to become truth. 

Not you or I or anyone was born with sin. We were all born whole, sovereign and free. It is our duty and our responsibility to remain so, in harmony with all other life around us. The pursuit of our life should not be reduced to performative actions so we end up in the “right place” after death. The pursuit of our life should focus on reducing harm to amplify peace on earth now. We don’t have to wait until death to find peace. That’s a choice. Opt out anytime.
