25” silk threaded necklace with clasp at the side of the left fairy wing.
Due to the death’s head hawkmoths’ distinctive appearance they have become a symbol of their own mythology. To many they are more than striking members of the night.
European folklore feared these night flying creatures as omens, or harbingers of death. Other cultures believed they carried messages from ancestors. And still there are others who see them as a clue to look for hidden truths.
I’ve always been drawn to the misfits, the outcasts and “rejects” of our world. I have preferred to see them associated with rebirth. Some times things, behaviors, circumstances must end, or “die”, in order to move on. It may feel scary at first —when is change comfortable?— but it’s natural, important and needed.
If we zoom out from the -at times, darkness of their past symbologies —and remember things only have as much meaning as we assign to them; we can become acutely aware of what and how much we are projecting onto the people and things around us.
At the end of the day the death head hawkmoth is simply a nocturnal insect with a very cool design. What we think of the moth is about us. What are you projecting onto the world around you as signs and symbologies? What does it tell you? How can you let this awareness fuel your own metamorphosis?
