Many of us in America —-specifically in the Bible Belt, were indoctrinated with the mythology that a man was somehow created before a woman. We were instructed to believe that because of this woman and her insatiable curiosity we have menstrual cycles, painful births, and should always be treated with suspicion (can’t trust a woman, right?).
What if we let that end here?
You can still have your religion and your faith.
Simply include modern understanding of biology, evolution and the only observable conclusion that all of us came from a woman, a womb.
The pain of being a physical crossroads from here and there, where we usher life between the cosmos is not to be merely tolerated as the result of the failures of some ancient woman’s character. No, it is to be revered, believed and respected.
The lesson that curiosity is punished is a lesson we should commit ourselves to leave in the past. Children should be taught and encouraged to ask as many questions as possible. There is no unsafe question from a child to their parent: there can only be unsafe parents.
Vive la Résistance is —-to me, in part, about accepting we cannot have matriarchal safety if we are worshipping patriarchal institutions.
You can have your religion, and your faith. Perhaps spend more time reflecting on why your scriptures taught you Mary Magdalene was a woman of ill repute than celebrating her as the very first disciple, most trusted confidant of JC and was the only one waiting for him at his resurrection. His message to the men who fled? They should have listened to the women.
I’m deconstructing from the church to heal as much of the religious trauma as I can. Not unlike the metaphors and thoughts I find inspiring in various cultures’ mythologies, I do still find aspects of the Christian Bible interesting. More so in how it’s taught than anything.
I leave you with this thought: the next time your spiritual leader is adamantly urging you to accept a certain doctrine as fact ask yourself, “who does this benefit if I believe it?” “Does this make me more wise, or more easily manipulated?” “Does this make me a better parent, friend, partner or neighbor?”
